Roles & Responsibilities:
Programming:
- Import, check and repair customer CAD data (STEP, IGES, Parasolid, DXF) and model bar stock, part geometry and secondary features.
- Build complete machine setups in ESPRIT using the correct kinematic machine files, including guide bushing on/off configurations, bar feeder, main and sub spindle, and back-working attachments.
- Programme full multi-channel operations: turning, live tooling, cross and angled drilling, thread whirling, polygon turning, deep-hole drilling, part-off and sub-spindle pick-up.
- Synchronise and balance channels to minimise cycle time — overlap gang tooling, run back-working concurrently with front-working, and eliminate idle motion.
- Post-process to the correct machine post and validate the output; identify and specify post-processor amendments where required.
Simulation and proving:
- Run full solid verification in ESPRIT, checking for collisions against the guide bushing, headstock, tool blocks, sub-spindle and part catcher.
- Pay particular attention to Z-clearances close to the guide bushing, the principal crash risk on sliding head machines.
- Attend first-off runs with the setter, resolve issues at the machine, and formally sign off proven programs.
Tooling and process development:
- Select tooling, holders, sleeves and cutting data; work with tooling suppliers on inserts, form tools and whirling rings.
- Create and maintain the ESPRIT tool library, KnowledgeBase, feature-recognition rules and post templates so that programming is consistent and repeatable across the team.
- Advise on material behaviour and chip control — brass, free-machining and leaded steels, stainless, titanium and engineering plastics.
Documentation and quality
- Produce setup sheets, tool lists, offset data, bar length and remnant information, and cycle time records for every job.
- Support the estimating team with realistic cycle times and tooling costs at quotation stage.
- Contribute to control plans, PFMEA, first article inspection and PPAP submissions, ensuring programmed features satisfy drawing GD&T and the agreed inspection method.
Continuous improvement:
- Review and re-programme legacy jobs to reduce cycle time, improve tool life and cut scrap.
- Maintain program revision control, network storage, backups and DNC transfer.
- Train and support setters and operators; troubleshoot alarms, dimensional drift and tool breakage.
- Keep ESPRIT licences, software updates and the post library current, and stay abreast of new machine and tooling capability.
