Core Job Responsibilities
- Interpreting Blueprints: Read engineering drawings, CAD/CAM files, and technical specifications to understand part dimensions and tolerances.
- Machine Setup: Install, align, and secure cutting tools, fixtures, and raw workpieces on manual or Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines.
- Operation & Shaping: Run lathes, milling machines, grinders, and drills to turn, cut, bore, and shape materials.
- CNC Programming & Monitoring: Program or adjust CNC machines, watch live cutting feeds and speeds, and fix operational errors.
- Quality Control: Use precision measuring tools—such as micrometers and calipers—to check finished pieces against required specifications and discard defects.
- Maintenance & Safety: Perform routine machine lubrication, minor troubleshooting, and keep a clean, safe workspace.
Key Skills & Qualifications
- Technical Knowledge: Strong mechanical aptitude and deep familiarity with metal properties.
- Precision & Math: Solid grasp of applied mathematics and tight measurement tolerances (often down to thousandths of an inch or millimeters).
- Education: High school diploma or vocational training/ITI certification in machinist trades.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to stand for long shifts, handle heavy components, and follow safety protocols.
