A Vertical Machining Center (VMC) Operator sets up, runs, and maintains CNC milling machines to produce precision parts. They translate blueprints into machine commands, load raw materials, set precise tool offsets, and use measuring instruments to ensure components meet exact tolerance specifications.
Key Responsibilities
Machine Setup & Operation: Prepare and operate VMC machines for tasks such as milling, drilling, and tapping. Load raw materials, fixtures, and cutting tools correctly.
Programming & Offsets: Read and interpret 2D/3D engineering drawings. Load, edit, or write basic G-code and M-code programs, and set precise tool and work offsets to guarantee machining accuracy.
Quality Control: Conduct trial runs and perform in-process inspections using precision measuring instruments (e.g., micrometers, calipers, height gauges) to verify dimensions against blueprints.
Tooling & Materials: Select appropriate cutting tools and adjust feed/speed rates based on material properties (e.g., steel, aluminum, plastics) to prevent tool wear and optimize the surface finish.
Maintenance & Troubleshooting: Perform routine preventative maintenance (cleaning, lubricating, checking coolant levels) and troubleshoot minor mechanical issues or programming errors.
Safety Compliance: Adhere strictly to all safety protocols, wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and maintain a clean, hazard-free work environment.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education: ITI, Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent vocational certification in machining technology.
Experience: 2 to 5 years of hands-on experience setting up and operating VMC machines.
Technical Skills: Proficiency in reading engineering drawings, utilizing measuring tools, and operating standard controllers (e.g., Fanuc, Siemens, Haas).
Soft Skills: Strong mechanical aptitude, high attention to detail, and excellent problem-solving abilities.
Work Environment
Standard manufacturing shop floor conditions.May require standing for long periods, lifting heavy materials, and working in shifts.
